The Short-Cuts

the 'Cuts | history

HISTORY

The Short-Cuts started life at an early age. Bund and Eddie have known each other as long as they can remember (their mothers on the same maternity ward), Eddie in fact was supposed to be born first but as a testament to his laziness he didn't pop out until a few weeks later!

At the age of three, Eddie moved from Winsford to the cleaner pastures of Comberbach. Here he met a stupid blonde boy who then turned out to be Sammy.

Towards the end of primary school the band first started to be interested in music, both Sammy and Eddie played in two of Tom Kirkpatrick's bands, the Beatles Brothers and the Rockaholics. Eddie then went on to drum for Modesty.

During high school a bigger interest in music developed with the resurgence of punk music in 1994. A year or so later Sammy joined a local punk band that shall remain nameless for legal reasons (we want to stay out of the small claims court)
; )

'said band' would go on to play countless 16th birthday parties during the remainder of high school.

At this point Eddie and Bund had started to mess about musically, Eddie moved to Guitar and Bund played on the drums. They played with different friends including Aman Krishna (formerly of The Blue), Paul Garratt and Stu Lin (co-founding member of Hip Hop You Don't Stop and The Doppelgangers along with Neil Fist).

For some reason or other (You may want to ask him) Sammy was told an interesting story about King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.

At this point Sammy hooked up with Eddie, Bund and Stu to start Fatty Melenco. This incarnation of lasted all of 4 weeks when Stu discovered various girls.

Fatty Melenco was no more and the three remaining members became
The Handy Jack-Offs with Sammy having his first go at singing.

By now the band were at 6th form (their no fools!) and for the first time started gigging regularly.

The bands first gig was on the 27th November supporting The Radioactive Strawberries. This was the first of many gigs around the Cheshire area including gigs with The Honey Shop Screamers at Winnington Rec and Telfords Warehouse.

After about half a year the band decided to ask John to play trumpet to give the band a little something extra. John was already a friend of Sammy's since the start of college.

For the next three years the band was lucky enough to play in lots of places with some really good bands including; The Hyperjax, The Honey Shop Screamers (now Victor FME), Spunge, Grimace, Hilda Strange, Zen Baseballbat, Fubar, The Wayriders, Caffiene, and For Tomorrows amongst others.

To try and fill out the sound a little further the band asked Lucy Morris to come along to a few practices with her saxophone. She did this and played with
The Handy Jack-Offs at a gig in Manchester on Sammy's nineteenth birthday.

This continued until the end of summer 2001.
The band decided it was time for a new start and played their last ever gig as The Handy Jack-Offs at Winnington Rec in August.

Re-naming the band The Short-Cuts they took some time to get the songs to a point at which they were chuffed with and just to generally have a bit of a break. The band asked Matthew Cooley, a mate of theirs formerly of Lazy and Point 9 to join on a second guitar.

The Short-Cuts have just started gigging again so the story stops here for now. Please check out the band if they play near you.
